"Dear Tomas, please introduce yourself particularly on your role with Surf Lakes Holdings Limited."
/Hi to everyone, thanks for the invitation to share what we do with Surf Lakes. I’m honored to be working as Sales Director & New Biz development along with the best team in the wave pool industry.
At Surf Lakes we are starting a revolution by selling our unique patented technology that creates multiple wave breaking surf parks. A Surf Lake can be constructed almost anywhere needed, allowing lots of people to enjoy the benefits of the rapid growing surfing lifestyle, engaging and inspiring people through a broader offering of water-oriented activities that will surely initiate positive community change.
My role consist in adding my extensive knowledge gained in the action sports, marketing & entertainment scene while working for other forward thinking companies on a worldwide level like Red Bull, Apple & so on.
On a day to day basis, I have the privilege to identify, respond & interact with many private + public sectors interested in buying our tech, with the objective of finding the best partners and co-create together these incredible venues.
"What is the core technology that was invented by Surf Lakes Holdings Limited? How
does the technology function? Please tell us more about the revolution technology."
2.1) SURF LAKE TECH
Surf Lakes has invented a revolutionary, proprietary method of producing high-quality surfing waves in a controlled lake environment. By sending large concentric waves over separate reef breaks, a Surf Lakes facility is capable of producing over 2000 rides per hour. Each wave varies in size, shape and length, allowing surfers of all abilities to surf at once. This allows a Surf Lakes facility to cater for over 200 surfers per hour guaranteeing them at least 10 rides each. This is the most on offer in the wave pool space by far and therefore allows for most revenue.
The science and engineering behind Surf Lakes is truly revolutionary. Unique bathymetric designs of our pool floor mimic nature and help to produce ocean-like waves. The floor design interacts with our patented wave mechanism where one central swell generates up to 10 separate waves to the surrounding reefs and beach breaks.
2.2) HOW SURF LAKES WORK
The mechanics behind Surf Lakes unique technology combines the usage of compressed air and water to lift the plunger-like Central Wave Device (CWD) before using gravity to allow for the unit to be retuned into the water. The "dropping of the unit creates a tsunami effect where energy is pushed outward and toward the shoreline before the energy overbalances on the carefully shaped artificial reefs to create endless perfect waves. The lifting and dropping of the CWD (called "stroke") takes place roughly every six seconds. The stroke height ie the distance covered by the lifting and falling, determines the wave size. The larger the stroke the larger the wave.
2.3) CUSTOM DESIGN
Themes for a site are limitless. The lake can be created in various sizes and shapes, within some limitations and obviously budget constraints notwithstanding. Some clients wish to fit their sites into an existing lake – where it will be drained so that the bathymetry can be formed and lined, but the natural shoreline shape remains.
"On behalf of our community, kindly brief us through the requirements of building the
surfing facilities. Where can they be built and what are the key requirement of space
and sizes? Does your company offer any franchising or licensing model?"
…If you can dream it, we can create it!
Surf Lakes has two products as we speak, each designed to appeal to different markets and also suit varying locations and site sizes. The two models include the Surf Lakes “standard” model and the Surf Lakes XL model.
Standard
Surf Lakes standard has a smaller footprint and is designed to cater for the beginner to intermediate markets. The smaller footprint will allow for Surf Lakes standard models to be built in areas where larger parcels of land are scarce. And with a smaller price tag, while still producing up to 2000 rides per hour, the potential for optimum ROI is at a premium.
Surf Lakes Standard Model is 155 metres x 125 metres, or 2 ha.
Surf Lakes XL
Surf Lakes XL, has a larger footprint, is designed to cater for the beginner through to pro markets and be capable of catering for large international events such as the Olympics or other elite competitions. The larger footprint will allow for Surf Lakes XL models to be built with the notion of becoming a premium surf destination or resort appealing to first timers, families, and also the hard-core surfer with the potential to house five levels of ability simultaneously.
Surf Lakes XL Model is 210 metres x 170 metres or 3.6 ha.
The advantage of utilizing Surf Lakes unique concentric wave making technology, is such that hourly wave productivity remains the same regardless of size, therefore the delivery of maximum wave numbers is maintained. When choosing a wave making technology, wave count per hour and wave quality are paramount, which are two critical reasons as to why Surf Lake's product is so superior over competitor models.
Another advantage of the Surf Lakes system is its ability to be designed in a layout of the licensee’s choice. Themes for a site are limitless. Some clients wish to fit their sites into an existing lake – where it will be drained so that the bathymetry can be formed and lined, but the natural shoreline shape remains. Others wish to fit the lake profile with natural landforms such as canyons, so a bespoke layout is required. Some have open space and
can create a shape to suit. If required, the central mechanism can be covered or themed to suit. It can look like a moving natural island or a rocky headland covered in palms... so, again, if you can dream it, we can create it!
We look forward to recreating environments similar to great surf beaches to create incredible experiences for visitors.
In each case we are pursuing regenerative development such that the natural environment is enhanced and improved by the development. We are speaking with experts in organic and natural sequence farming to understand how we can best enhance the surrounding environments as well as the immediate shorelines.
Each location will be designed with the market and seasons in mind. Smaller waves need much less energy than larger waves, so optimizing the wave “schedule” for the week and each day is important in order to conserve energy. Depending on all of these factors, the installed power requirement could be 5-10MW or more, depending again on scale, markets and seasons.
The goal is for each facility to use renewables and we can also regenerate electricity from the channels, where the water returns to the center of the lake. This can become a very helpful feature of the Surf Lakes venues, along with on-site solar and wind generation. Each facility can generate renewables from hydro, wind and solar, making it eco-friendly.
Built time & process. We have allowed 36 months from signing of the Agreement for the licensee to finalize approvals and build the Surf Lake. Depending upon the design and level of customization, the actual construction can typically take nine to 12 months.
Our company has a licensing model & it’s open to study any new biz opp or needed change of size. Contact me to help in assisting anyone interest at: tomas@surf-lakes.com.au.
"To-date, how many surfing facilities have been built by Surf Lakes Holdings Limited?
Is the Covid-19 pandemic slowing down the entire development roadmap? Tourism
is almost hibernated in some countries. How did your company face the post
pandemic despite majority of theme parks and resorts are heavily affected?"
/We have our main surfing facility built in our Australia HQ and we are currently busy working/developing projects basically all over the world. We have signed intentions + projects moving forward in all the five continents already. It’s the birth of an industry and we are happy to lead it to the next level.
Having created a truly unique tech that allows us to build an artificial beach with multiple breaking waves at once, being able our venue to be constructed almost anywhere needed, is giving our company an edge & we are truly overwhelmed with the fast international response and concrete interest from many different private and public sectors.
Regarding the Covid-19 pandemic. I personally believe in the Chinese saying/concept of “Crisis = opportunity to change”. It did alter us for a bit the initial development roadmap, but at the same time the pandemic is fostering a new type of tourism that everyone now interested in constructing a Surf Lakes facility will capitalize in a near future: its called “Proximity tourism”.
On the 13 of May of 2020, Francesc Romagosa, from the Barcelona’s School of Tourism wrote the following article titled: “The COVID-19 crisis: Opportunities for sustainable and proximity tourism”, where he cited…
“…Despite the uncertainty we referred to at the beginning of the article, one of the most likely consequences of this crisis is the bolstering of proximity tourism (Navarro Jurado et al., 2020), understood it as doing tourism and travelling near home. This prediction is based on the fact that with greater social and environmental awareness (Lew, 2020), post-crisis tourists will probably choose to travel to destinations closer to their place of residence. In the context of growing insecurity and uncertainty, nearby destinations could be considered ‘less risky’ by many potential tourists who, having been noticeably affected by the economic crisis arising from the health crisis....Added to this, there may in fact be restrictions on international (long-distance) travel, at least for a while; in helping to reduce overall emissions, this would certainly be in line with both the promotion of more sustainable tourism and the concept of degrowth.
In brief, all stakeholders, including us as researchers, have a task of great responsibility: to help redirect tourism—from the point of view of both supply and demand— towards a truly sustainable and resilient profile that is fit for a future that is constantly changing and full of new challenges.”
So in a nutshell, we firmly believe that public or private locations having a Surf Lake facility will be able to capitalize big time not only for the obvious reasons but also make the most with this new type of proximity tourism development as well.
If you are a private real estate group or firm, willing to construct the next generation of urban or rural development, having a Surf Lake facility will cater to entire families + young professionals willing to have a portion of this unique & secured beach environment to enjoy.
"Is surfing gaining much interests among youth community and families? How do
your company promote and market the surfing facilities to potential partners?"
/The surf industry is one of the fastest growing action sports industries in the world and is worth around $10 billion. With the advent of Olympic surfing and wave pools like Surf Lakes, the sport of riding waves will likely continue to conquer new markets and segments of the population that have never had contact with surfboards.
The sport of surfing has also emerged a fashion and lifestyle trend. The growing focus on wellness and fitness is also leading to increased interest in surfing, as spas and wellness centers promote the sport as a fitness ritual. Interest in water sports among women also increased, which is another reason behind increased sales of surfboards.
Surfing apparel and equipment market benefits from the rising popularity of surfing as a health and fitness activity due to its ability to offer whole-body benefits. Surf tourism has contributed significantly to the demand for surfing equipment and apparel over the years. Surfing vacations hold tremendous potential and are likely to be a vital component of the global travel industry in the post COVID-19 period.
To promote our company we have team up with some iconic world surfing pro champs like Mark Occhilupo & Barton Lynch, world bodyboarding champ Ben Player & Luca Doble, Junior World Longboard Champ. We are developing an international social media campaign showing what we do & how we work in condensed shorts.
Last but not least, we have also created the first truly international sales/marketing team that is helping the company to connect & speak locally almost anywhere in the world.
"Surf Lakes Holdings Limited is expanding aggressively. What is your company
roadmap within 3 years plan? Please share with us the globalization strategies."
/Before entering in our expansion strategy I will like to reflect & repeat that a Surf Lakes facility is more than just a surf park – it is a multiuse aquatic complex with enormous community benefit.
With its four to five main surf areas, swim zones, deep water zones, eight acres of flat water when swtiched off (XL model only) and 360-degree shoreline, the potential to engage and inspire people through a broader offering of water-oriented activity will surely initiate more positive community change.
Creating 800 linear meters of beachfront is also a real state developer dream. Think of a Surf Lakes facility being a genuine necessity in any community-focused infrastructure project.
After speaking with many city councils, we can be sure that many boxes related to community benefits and engagement will be ticked – many more so than traditional sport-oriented fields and pools. Think about physical and mental wellness benefits, Surf Life Saving and water related education, events for surfing, swimming, triathlons, kayaking, diving, school programs, corporate programs and more... A Surf Lakes facility allows for so much more than any other technology in this space.
For the next 3 years, Surf Lakes' vision is to become the biggest brand in surfing... sustainably. Our mission is to keep building surfing communities to create a healthier world.
